Crete is a walkers paradise, especially in the west. It has a unique combination of beautiful seas and high mountains, wild beauty and the friendliness of the locals. And of course, the climate is just perfect. The whole island of Crete is criss-crossed by trails which used to be used by shepherds. It can be possible to walk all day without meeting another person in areas that are practically unknown and uninhabited, with undisturbed flora and fauna.
Samarian Gorge
For walkers, it is a must to visit the Samarian gorge whilst visiting Crete. It is the most incredible experience providing you are physically strong enough to walk downhill for 15 kilometres. The walk starts from Omalos at the Wooden Staircase (Xiloskala) and walk down to the stream and begin the walk towards the sea, passing the deserted village of Samaria. You will see a variety of wildflowers and terrains. The end of the gorge is at the village of Agio Roumeli, where there are restaurants and cafes for a well deserved drink. There is also a boat to take you to Chora Sfakion to catch the local bus to various parts of the island.
