Rethmynon is one of the main and loveliest cities of Crete. It is divided into the Old Town and the New Town which are both delightful. The old part of Rethymnon is particularly beautiful, full of old buildings and stone-paved narrow alleys. A huge Venetian fortress is overlooking the city, adding a touch of mystery. The Fortress dominates the city and makes Rethmynon very photogenic, with its pedestrian streets strewn with charming old buildings. Venetian influences abound and the minarets and domed mosques remind of the Turkish influence of long ago. Numerous shops for souvenirs and local produce combine with the trendy fashion and jewellery shops make a colourful and buzzing town.
Coast villages of Rethymnon
There are two sides to Rethmynon: the endless big beach hotel strip that stretches from the east end of Rethymnon, the old town, full of character, with its mix of architecture and history, cultural influences and styles ranging from Venetian to Ottoman empire.

For those seeking a way to enjoy their summer nights, the resort of Rethmynon will be a real delight. Excellent taverns with Greek music, modern bars of all kinds of atmosphere and night clubs playing all kinds of music can be found here.
Folklore and History Museum
The Folklore and History Museum of Rethymnon is in a restored Venetian building, having a collection of over 5,000 items dating from the 17th century such as textile and basket weaving, embroidery and lace, costumes, ceramics, weapons and coins.
Festivals
As the end of Spring, the shepherds of the lands of Rethymnon celebrate with the sheering of their animals, accompanied by a lavish feast, some even bringing their sheep down for blessing at the church. Fruit gathering from orchards and vineyards is also celebrated, in the autumn, with the making of 'raki', the local Cretan drink.
