Ierapetra is the most populated town in it's area and the fourth town of Crete. It is nicknamed 'bride of the Libyan Sea', due to its position as the only town on the south coast of Crete. The area of Ierapetra has a reputation for its wonderful sandy beaches, its mild climate and unhampered sunshine, not forgetting its early fruits and vegetables.
What is there
In the area of Ierapetra, you will find old stone farmhouses, monasteries and villages perched on mountain ridges and the remains of castles and chapels on the steep surrounding slopes. There is a coastline of rocks but also lots of endless sandy or pebble beaches in and around the area. Ierapetra has the longest beach on Crete and crystal blue waters.
Ierapetra harbour
The fortress and harbour was originally built by the Venetians and way back in 1626, they enlarged and reinforced it. However in recent times, the castle was restored by the people of the city.
The Villages
There are two villages of Ierapetra Kato Mera and Pano Mera. Kato Mera is the old town and is characterized by a medieval street layout with narrow alleyways and small houses. The 'house of Napolean' can also be found in this area. Pano Mera is a much bigger new town, with wide streets and is still very much expanding.
History of Ierapetra
The Turkish captured the town of Ierapetra in 1647 and you can still see the remains of their occupation in the old town, near to the harbour. The remains of a Turkish fountain can still be found in front of a derelict mosque.
What you will find
Ierapetra is one of the most productive regions of Greece for fresh fruits, vegetables, olive oil and flowers. Most of the population is employed in agriculture for the all year round cultivation of vegetables. The people of Ierapetra also have an income from the fresh fish bought in by the local fishermen.
Tavernas and Bars
Ierapetra has an excellent choice of find restaurants and tavernas overlooking the harbour, with local dishes of fresh fish, lobster, lamb and goat, together with a fine selection of European dishes.
